What is Ovaltine?

Ovaltine is a popular brand of malted milk powder that contains malted barley, wheat extract, milk solids, cocoa powder, and added vitamins. It comes in different varieties, including classic malt, chocolate malt, and even sugar-free versions.

Ovaltine is often used to make hot or cold malted milk drinks, but it can also be a fantastic flavor booster in baking. It adds a toasty, caramelized depth to cookies, brownies, cakes, and frostings. Because it contains cocoa, Ovaltine’s chocolate malt variety enhances chocolate-based recipes beautifully. For this recipe, I have used the classic malt. Don’t use the chocolate malt powder for it. In India, we have Horlicks, and the classic malt in India is the white Horlicks.

Why Use Ovaltine in Baking?

  • Adds a deep, malty, and caramelized flavor.
  • Enhances chocolate desserts with a richer, more complex taste.
  • Contributes to a chewy, tender texture in cookies and cakes.
  • Gives a nostalgic, milkshake-like taste that pairs well with chocolate chips and M&Ms.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat & Prep: Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cream Butter & Sugars: In a bowl, mix butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until fluffy.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients: stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Combine Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together flour, malted milk powder, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Mix Dough: Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, add a few splashes of milk so that the cookie dough comes together stir until combined. Add milk a teaspoon at a time so that you don’t make a very wet dough. Fold in chocolate chips and M&M’s.
  6. Scoop & Bake: Drop tablespoon-sized dough balls onto the baking sheet. Press extra M&M’s and chocolate chips on top. I made 8 cookies out of this dough as I used a medium-large ice-cream scooper.
  7. Bake: Bake for 10 minutes until edges are set but centers are slightly soft.
  8. Cool & Enjoy: Let cookies cool on the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
