Typically, one batter is flavored with vanilla and the other with chocolate. The two batters are alternately spooned into the cake pan, and then gently swirled together to create a marbled effect.

The result is a visually appealing cake with a delightful combination of flavors in each bite. The marbling effect not only makes the cake look elegant and sophisticated but also adds an element of surprise and fun, as no two slices are exactly the same. How to create an easy marble look?


  • Two different cake batters (typically vanilla and chocolate)


  1. Prepare the Batters:
    • Make a batch of vanilla cake batter and a batch of chocolate cake batter. You can either make two separate batters or start with one vanilla batter and split it, adding cocoa powder to one half to make the chocolate batter.
  2. Alternate Spoonfuls:
    • Grease and flour your cake pan.
    • Pour a spoonful of vanilla batter into the pan, then a spoonful of chocolate batter next to it. Continue alternating spoonfuls of each batter in the pan until all the batter is used up. You can create a checkerboard pattern or simply alternate randomly.
  3. Create the Swirls:
    • Take a butter knife or a skewer and gently swirl it through the batters in the pan. Make sure to move the knife in different directions to create a marbled effect. Be careful not to over-mix; you want distinct swirls, not a blended batter.

  7. Strong Black Coffee:
    • Coffee enhances the chocolate flavor and adds moisture to the cake.
    • Coffee intensifies the chocolate flavor without making the cake taste like coffee. It also adds a depth of flavor.
  8. Melted Chocolate:
    • Melted Chocolate adds a rich chocolate flavor and contributes to the moistness of the chocolate portion of the cake.
    • Provides a smooth and intense chocolate taste, enhancing the overall flavor contrast in the marble cake.
  9. Cocoa Powder:
    • This adds chocolate flavor and color.
    • Cocoa powder is used to create the chocolate portion of the batter, contributing to the marbled effect and giving a deeper chocolate flavor.

Combining the Ingredients:

  1. Creaming:
    • Cream the butter and caster sugar until light and fluffy. This helps it incorporate air and creates a stable mixture for the other ingredients to blend into.
  2. Adding Eggs:
    • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. To ensure proper emulsification, resulting in a smooth and consistent batter. Add the vanilla.
  3. Mixing Dry Ingredients:
    • Sift together self-raising flour and salt, then add to the creamed mixture. This ensures even distribution of leavening agents and prevents overmixing, which can lead to a tough cake.
  4. Preparing Chocolate Batter:
    • Combine melted chocolate, cocoa powder, and strong black coffee with a portion of the vanilla batter. This helps create a separate chocolate batter that can be swirled with the vanilla batter to form the marble effect.
  5. Swirling:
    • Spoon dollops of vanilla and chocolate batter into the prepared cake pan, then use a knife to swirl them together. That’s how the characteristic marbled appearance is created, blending the flavors without fully mixing them.



  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C and butter and line a 9′ 9-inch round pan.
  2. Take the soft butter and the caster sugar and beat it until it’s light and fluffy.
  3. Add eggs one at a time beating after each addition.
  4. Stir in vanilla.
  5. Sift the flour and salt and stir into the creamed mixture lightly. Don’t overdo the mixing just mix it till you don’t see any pockets of flour and use the cut-and fold method.
  6. Take out half the mixture in a second bowl and beat in the milk.
  7. Combine the melted chocolate, Coffee, and coco powder together and add it to the other half of the mixture.
  8. Now put a spoonful of this batter the chocolate and vanilla into the prepared baking tin. Use the marbling method as discussed above.
  9. Bake for 40 minutes and a clean skwer means the cake is baked.
  10. Let it cool down. Cut into pieces and Enjoy!
